How Do I Restore My Data

Restoring data that you have accidentally lost, archived, or want to transfer to another computer is quick and easy with BounceBack®. There are three ways to recover data:

1) By using the QuickRestore shortcut icon on your desktop.
2) By using the Compare List from the Launch BounceBack® Backup/Compare command in the BounceBack® Launcher task bar menu.
3) By dragging and dropping files in Windows Explorer.

How Do I Recover from a Disk Crash?

Note: These options are only available for bootable backup drives. Disaster Recovery must also be selected during installation.

First you need to determine if it is the hard drive that has crashed, or some other failure has disabled your system (for example, the monitor or system board). You have these options if your system disk has crashed:

  • You can replace the hard drive in your computer yourself, using the backup drive as the replacement.
  • You can package and ship your computer along with the backup drive to a repair facility and let them replace the drive (recommended).
  • You can send your computer to a repair facility and continue to work by using your backup hard drive with another compatible computer while your computer is repaired.
  • You can use the BounceBack® Rescue Disk to try to boot your computer and recover your files.
  • If you are using a Secondary Bay Drive in a notebook computer as your backup device, you can directly boot the backup drive.

What Is The Rescue Disk For and How Does It Work?

The BounceBack® Rescue Disk is designed to help you recover from a disk crash when the computer cannot boot to the operating system. If you have done a complete initial backup of your computer, and backed up the data on your computer on a regular basis, you should be well protected from a disk crash. Follow these steps:

1. Power off the computer.
2. Connect the backup drive.
3. Insert the Rescue Disk CD in the computer’s CD drive.
4. Power on the computer.
5. Several status messages scroll across the screen during the boot-up procedure.
6. Enter one of the following commands at the next prompt.

Rescue – This command rewrites the Windows folder from the backup drive back to your source drive. Rescue is only compatible with FAT formatted drives. If your system is formatted with the FAT file system, a Rescue should be attempted before the Image command.

Important: The Rescue command will NOT work with Windows systems that have the Windows folder named something other than Windows (ex: WinXP).

Image – This command will overwrite your source drive with the contents of the backup drive. Image is only compatible with NTFS formatted drives in Windows 2000, or XP.

Note: When you use the image command, the hard drive in the computer must have enough disk space for all the data on the backup drive. In other words, the computer disk capacity must be equal to or greater than the backup drive capacity.

Note: When you use the image command, the Rescue Disk will automatically copy the files and directories from the backup drive to your computer. The process takes several minutes, and if the screen on your computer goes blank, you can press the Ctrl key to bring it back. You will see several star characters (*) scroll on the screen as the data is recovered from the Backup drive to your computer.

7. Reboot the computer and verify that your system has been successfully repaired.

Can I Backup More Than One Computer?

It is possible to use one ABSplus backup system to serve more than one machine, however, only one bootable backup can reside on each ABSplus drive (Windows). Secondary backups can be made into folders that the user creates on the ABSplus drive, or onto partitions created on the ABSplus drive.

The ABSplus BounceBack Professional software includes a formatter utility that enables the user to format and partition their drive. Keep in mind, customized "multi-machine" backups like this do need to be setup using the Advanced Install when first installing BounceBack Professional. Users are urged to review the product manual included on the CD prior to attempting to setup a multi-machine backup scenario.

Does ABSplus/BounceBack Support Server Backup?

BounceBack® Professional is designed for client backup primarily. It will handle some small server environments, but does not handle enterprise environments where applications such as Exchange or SQL are in play. BounceBack® Professional needs to have all user applications closed and all files available in order to create a successful backup, therefore, client backup is the preferred environment for the solution.

Can I Use a Desktop ABSplus on a Laptop?

You can use a desktop ABSplus system to backup data from a laptop, however, you would sacrifice valuable options in the realm of disaster recovery.

  • Differences in Drive Geometries - ABSplus Desktop backup systems contain a 3.5" IDE hard drive, ABSplus Portable backup systems contain a 2.5" laptop hard drive. You can not adequately re-image from a desktop backup drive down onto a laptop drive without losing data, what's more, the capacities of the drives usually do not match and the Rescue CD would not be able to accommodate such discrepancies.
  • Physical Difference in Drive Size - One of the major advantages to hard drive based backup is the ability to install the ABSplus drive, replacing a failed hard disk. Due to the size differences between desktop backup systems and portable backup systems, it is physically impossible to install a desktop backup drive inside a laptop.

You can still recover files from a desktop backup system as soon as your laptop has a functioning hard drive. CMS's recommendation for all laptop users is to use a backup drive that matches the capacity of the hard disk inside your laptop.

Will Velocity Series (SATA) Backup Systems Work on my Laptop?

No - CMS's Velocity Series drives are designed for use on Windows Desktop machines running Windows 2000 or XP and are not recommended for laptop use.

The Serial ATA (SATA) drive technology has not yet been developed on laptops, so there are great differences between the two drive technologies and ability to interface with one another. CMS Recommends a portable backup solution that best matches your particular laptop interface.
